Some of those who have existed in the shadow world for too long find themselves all alone, their friends all carried to the other side. But they were never taken. Left to wander by themselves, their souls become twisted by their loneliness into creatures that walk on all four of their skewer-limbs. When they see another creature they fire a harpoon on a gooey black tether to pull it closer to them, leaving it in agonizing pain until it can escape. Instinct: to feel love
